Professor Anton Jayasuriya inspired me during the course of my life at the Institute. He was a gentle, kind and caring man who was always showing his great compassion for people. Teaching the future generations of Acupuncture was his number one priority. I learned so much from him; the theory and practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine was taught to me. He did not indulge in preaching, always keeping in mind the big picture. His main focus was on patient care. Due to his achievements he was awarded the title of ‘Doctor Gracilis’ by University of Surgeons, Vukvarna on the 22nd of May, 1995. The same institution also bestowed a degree on him in the year 1999. From his humble beginnings in his family home in Kovilakam, which was a tea estate until the mid sixties, Anton Jayasuriya made his dream a reality of being the most renowned, educated and highly qualified Acupuncturist in Sri Lanka.

Manal Al Bukenie born in Beirut Lebanon in 1980. He was admitted to the Faculty of Medicine of the American University in the year 2004, from where he graduated in December 2007. He then pursued his Masters of Medical Science in Acupuncture and Moxibustion from the Centre of Acupuncture and Chinese Moxibustion and Clinical Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the American University. He graduated with distinction in 2009. He has also successfully completed two postgraduate acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine courses in the year 2009 and 2010.

Ever since the beginning of the seventies Dr. Jayasuriya has conducted hundreds of educational programs on the application of acupuncture in rehabilitating patients, and on the role of acupuncture in the overall treatment of various diseases. He was instrumental in establishing the first school of Acupuncture in the world in 1984, which has since become the largest in the world, with over 1,500 students.

Professor Anton Jayasuriya was awarded the first honorary degree in its history by the University of Western Sydney in recognition of his services in promoting the use of complementary medicine. He was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Tasmania, Australia. It is used by doctors, therapists, osteopaths and physiotherapists throughout the world as a guide to the use of acupuncture for both the general practitioner and those undergoing treatment. It also covers the use of acupuncture in pregnancy, childbirth, and the management of issues such as headaches, menstrual pain, rheumatism, and menopausal problems. It is usually used as a textbook in the classrooms of acupuncture students. Until this time, Patients in Sri Lanka had to travel to Colombo or other cities to have acupuncture done. Professor Jayasuriya, his wife Rekha and his three children (Gerald, Andrew and Michi) established a free clinic in June of 1994 in order to provide acupuncture treatments to those in need. Since then the clinic has served over three million patients.
Although Professor Anton Jayasuriya has dedicated much of his life to the study of acupuncture, he never stopped developing his healing skills as a Rheumatologist and eventually became an expert in rheumatology and rehabilitative medicine. He has also worked as an expert witness in the state and federal courts throughout the United States on cases involving acupuncture and traditional medicine. His life’s work includes being a medical expert on the subject of acupuncture and traditional medicine worldwide.
