abu dawood (8/149) narrates from muhammad ibn al-hajjaj from muḥammad ibn abī ḥātim: from al-abbas ibn amr al-anṣari said: “the (prophet’s) mother (a’isha) told him: ‘o allah’s messenger, did you eat anything of the food of a captive?’ he said: ‘yes.'” al-abbas said: “he (the prophet) said: ‘i ate it and i did not know why.'” he said: “the verse was revealed concerning that incident.” al-ansari said: “al-abbas ibn amr al-anṣari said: “i do not remember anyone else besides him (muḥammad ibn abī ḥātim) who informed about it, but only he.”

maʿrifah (3/354) narrates from his father that the prophet said: “go and tell the people of al-muharram on the tenth of the month of ramadan that after me, people will come and recite the qur’an (with the intention) of eating the food of an arab and the food of a non-arab, which is a thorn from the side of the ummah.” it is stated in kitab al-muharram (3/354) that the prophet ﷺ said: “do not eat the food of a captive, for indeed the ummah will eat the thorn from the side of the ummah with the intention of eating it.”

he has since given this book an entirely new title, al-zifaf fi adab al-hadith (adab of hadith) and published it himself as an independent medium. his edition is an attempt to capture the colour of the prophet’s dialect in all its richness. he calls the book hidayah tayr al-qabilin al-mala’ikhin (autobiography of the subtle of the seven), indicating that the book, now in its 11th edition, is at the level of an autobiography. in contrast to al-qazali, who popularised himself and his works, al-shatibi utilised and built upon the works of his forebears and predecessors, as will be seen in the next section.
