of the 1256d-10 flow, three intervals were selected for petrographic analysis: a 1-m-thick interval in the central core of the flow (interval 207-1256d-37r-3, piece 3); a 2-m-thick interval at the top of the flow, approximately at core depth of 450 m (interval 1256d-37r-3, piece 2); and a 2-m-thick interval in the bottom of the flow (interval 1256d-37r-3, piece 3). the petrographic study was performed using the same equipment and methods described in site 1256 core descriptions for the whole-round images.

the petrographic study of the intervals shows that the interior of the flow consists of thin, dark, and fine- to medium-grained lava with a vesicular matrix of plagioclase and pyroxene. small, rounded to subrounded plagioclase and magnetite grains are commonly disseminated in the matrix. thin, dark, and fine- to medium-grained lava flow is also present in the core intervals, and the lava body shows a tendency toward increasing porosity with increasing core depth. erosional remnants and dikes and veins are present.

the first core interval 206-1256c-8r-4 (160.3-266.3 mbsf) is a 15-m-thick (minimum = 8.0 m thick) massive lava unit composed of intergranular to coarse cryptocrystalline basalt, with a groundmass composed of partly glassy partly crumbly and partly granular subangular to rounded basalt clasts. pockets of clasts of alkali basalt glass are common. aphanitic basalts and spheroidal clasts are also present.

aphanitic basalts are present in core intervals 206-1256d-8r-3 (278.5-293.5 mbsf) and 206-1256d-59r-1 (293.5-320.5 mbsf), and consist of fine-grained to micritic groundmass with angular to subrounded clasts (fig. f162 ).
