Birdman: Watching a film is something that can be very emotionally intense, because it goes under the skin of your emotions. I think that The Wizard of Oz spoke to me more than any other film: the real world is a scary place, but what matters is looking at yourself in the mirror. In other words, you have to connect with your own self and your own emotions. It goes under the skin.
Birdman: I have an interest in post-modern humor, and Im fascinated by what gags people take, what people are too uncomfortable to laugh at, and what people laugh at. Im interested in how people talk to people they have no idea about in little sketches, no matter how inconsequential. People are often uncomfortable and make humorous gags about that. I love this kind of humor, because it gives a nice glimpse at the comfortable zones of our society, and also the places in which we are the most uncomfortable. The uncomfortable zone is the one which we agree to be the most scary and disturbing.
Birdman: I was very fortunate to find myself in a place, where films could be made without outside influences, without other authors interfering. That place exists, that kind of complete, total independence. I couldnt be happier about my life. If I were to study any other kind of film, I feel that I wouldnt be able to duplicate the kind of experience I had with those films.
Birdman: I think that the great thing about film is that it allows you to cross genres, and you can play against your stereotypes if you want to. The great thing about comedy is that you can sometimes just set out and fool around and, even though its misfire, you dont give a shit. Thats the great thing about films. The great thing about films is that they have no limits. They can be serious, they can be funny, and they can be silly. They can be anything. If youre lucky enough to find yourself in a place where there is no interference from other influences, you can even make an art film, and it just might be the best work youve ever done.
