the f-16 entered production in 1972, with the first production flight occurring on april 6, 1973. the f-16 was designed to replace the f-102 delta dagger and t-33 shooting star jet fighters. the first prototype rolled out on august 4, 1974. there are at least two airworthy, airworthy f-16c/d models, and an airworthy f-16a/b model. the f-16 is the first production fighter designed using the evolutionary design philosophy.
as of 2012, the f-16 was the last fighter aircraft to enter production to make use of the pressure-fed, afterburning turbofan engine. it is powered by a rolls-royce f-136 two-shaft, low-pressure (lp) turbine engine, which uses a combustion chamber to compress fuel, ignited by a spark plug. the engine provides 18,800 pounds of thrust and afterburner provides an additional 48,000 pounds of thrust for an additional range of 4,100 miles. power is supplied by a rolls-royce turbomeca adour iv turbofan which includes a strengthened compressor (for higher altitudes) and an improved afterburner.
the f-16a/b block 15 aircraft are based on the block 15/52 aircraft. the block 15 aircraft have been modified to include improved weapons and sensor systems, and have been equipped to support f-15s as a self-defense capability in low-threat environments. they have also been redesigned to meet the fighter weapons school’s advanced tactical fighter training mission (afterm) training mission. the block 15/52 aircraft were similar to the block 15/50 aircraft except they had less internal fuel. they were armed with the aim-9l sidewinder and aim-7m sparrow, but had no radar. they carried external hardpoints for external stores.
the f-16 was designed to be an all-weather, day and night fighter, capable of supersonic speeds and capable of penetrating multiple layers of enemy defenses. the f-16 can also be used for offensive missions, including air-to-ground attack and air-to-air combat. it is armed with a single 20mm cannon and a pair of 30mm gau-8/a gatling-type guns. it is also capable of carrying amraams. the f-16 can either be armed with maverick missiles or have a bomb bay. the f-16 can also be equipped with the an/ale-50 paveway ii laser-guided bomb. the f-16 can carry a variety of different types of aerial mines. the f-16 can also carry an internal drop tank, extending its range to nearly 2,000 miles.
structural maintenance has proven problematic for the f-16. the f-16a/b airframe has suffered from complex structural maintenance problems. the f-16a/b airframe has experienced fractures and fatigue cracks in the wing roots, center wing box, wing to fuselage attachment, wing tip root, wing tip assembly, wing flaps, nose gear, cockpit floor, tail cone, engine mount, and wing spar. poor quality fasteners and assembly techniques were a factor.
the first structural maintenance issue with the f-16a/b airframe occurred in the early 1980s when the f-16a/b wings flexed during high-g maneuvers. as a result, cracks formed in the wing root plates. the cracks were fixed by masking, forming an aluminum and epoxy patch. this fix was unsuccessful and resulted in another crack on the wing root, which required a new repair in 1992.
in march, 2001, the first design changes were implemented to address airframe structural cracking. the center wing box, rear wing root, and nose gear were redesigned and the reinforcement increased. the redesign also resulted in a loss of 1,000 pounds per aircraft. the f-16a/b/c airframe is one of the most complicated airframes to design, manufacture, and maintain. the aircraft has a complex structure with hundreds of individual parts that have to function in harmony. the airframe is designed to operate safely and reliably at a variety of speeds, altitudes, and other environmental conditions. the structure is very strong; yet, it must be lightweight.
