My journey into the world of Taiwanese dramas began with the debut of the Korean hit drama Gu Win, followed by my Touch My Heart 2 binge-watching craze in February 2014. Although I’m quite partial to dramas that have Taiwanese casts and local production studios, it didn’t take long for me to become addicted to watching time-slots from some of the most prominent Korean OTPs. It is safe to say I watch dramas involving Hitomi Helena, Kim So-Hyun, and Jaejoong anywhere from 4PM to 10PM.
Hana Yori Dango (1998) is more than entertaining. It paved the way for the genre of female-power dramaland and it’s heavily inspired by the likes of To Heart, Garden of Words, and Boys Over Flower. Meteor Garden combined the classic shjo with a refreshing dash of sweetness, humor, and swagger in its unique storytelling and character arcs. With its nuanced and layered character development, it’s very hard to call Hana Yori Dango a gimmick.
The fanservice-packed and heartwarming narrative isn’t too far from the manga that inspired it. Yu-Marie and Miyako Naruse have an endearing, romantic, and sincere relationship that never leaves time for the two to vent about their problems. So That’s How It Is, the drama’s opening theme sung by Rainbow Tulips, perfectly sums up their relationship.
Although the game-changing shakeup in Hana Yori Dango was never intended to alienate the fans, the story remained unchanged with a compulsory love triangle and constant inter-titular feuding. This has become the foundation of the F4 troupe’s story.
The chemistry between the actors was the first thing I noticed as a new fan from afar. I love how the onscreen siblings made us want to hug and kiss each other. The chemistry intensified once back in the Philippines a year later.
