*** What is a prime? ***
Not all numbers are primes. Actually, only numbers that cannot be divided by any other numbers are primes. Here are all prime numbers from 2 to 100: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89, 97.

You might notice that the program is very inefficient. It loops to test up to n/2 all prime numbers up to that limit (from 2 to n). A more efficient way of testing these numbers for divisibility is to use the Sieve of Eratosthenes. This method is also presented in the code above.

The sieve method is much more efficient because we only test each number one at a time. This is achieved by a process where we divide the number by the first prime number, and we fill in a list from a value to 1 with the odd numbers.

A bit of a warning before we leave you, though – the people that work on this project aren’t necessarily mathematicians and it may be a bit hard for them to understand some of the terminology that is used in the source code. Nevertheless, there are quite a few instructions that may be difficult for them to follow, so if you are expecting a completely easy-to-use app and a simple tool for generating prime numbers, you’d probably be better off downloading something else.

Great App!
Got primesieve last week. It has been incredibly useful for someone who was interested in prime numbers but didn’t have much of a clue how to go about it. In just under an hour I was able to generate prime numbers up to 65,000. There were no misspelled words, incorrect letters etc. In fact, I haven’t run into a
