as for my only real complaint with the game, the appeal of the comic book tie-in is both obvious and justified. its charmingly lewd, and its a wonderful way to experience these characters in a visual medium. but it is easy to see why such an approach is frowned upon by thq, which steadfastly refuses to license its saints to any other video game developers, even in the form of rom hacks. its an affront to the franchise as a whole that might feel as petty as the company cutting off beavis and butthead from cable tv.
theres also a great deal of cursing this time around, and the game is far more graphic, with lots of blood and more sexual innuendo. and yet, the game doesnt feel so dirty or excessive as it did in saints row. a lot of that has to do with the new (and strangely effective) method for dealing with the hud. as in the first game, the game tells you what to do with the touch screen, but this time its super easy to switch from it to the keyboard, thus taking the burden off your fingers. combined with the game’s overall responsive controls, its a great thing.
so, if you want to see where the franchise goes from here, youll need to turn off your brain and play saints row 2. because to the extent that chase is concerned about anything, it is with his medium, and the way he is able to subvert its iconic status. at its best, saints row 2 is a small and relatively inconsequential game with the likes of which the medium has never seen. it is as much a cult classic as it is a true masterpiece, and it continues the tradition of the series in an unexpected and entertaining way. thats as far as i can go with this one, but i am sure that it will be enough to get your attention. i know i was highly entertained and surprised by it, and it was also great fun to play.
