0.3 Mega Pixel Fixed Web Camera Drivers

The face of the camera, or lens position, is assumed to be (0,0,0) because the object is at infinity. The depth of field (DOF) is the distance from the camera at which objects lose focus behind and in front of them. The DOF causes problems that need to be overcome to get a sharp image with a fixed focus. When the DOF gets too great, objects which are not in the sharpest focus will be blurred as they are out of focus. When the DOF gets too small, all the attention is on the very close points. When trying to improve the image quality, the DOF has to be increased. An object located at a smaller distance from the camera (lower depth of field) is required. The axial depth of focus (Df) of any focal plane is given by the formula Df = λ/NA (by wavelength λ, by numerical aperture NA). In a real camera, the imaging optics will have defects which affect the image in subtle ways, and these cause the focal plane to be considered for that image as an envelope, rather than an ideal plane. The center of this envelope is where the sharpest image will be. This is called the best focus point (BFP). There will typically be several ideal planes for different objects. Typically, it is also desirable to determine the plane that will provide the best picture of the entire field of view (FOV). This will be called the ideal focus plane (or front focal plane).

Many manufacturers have gained experience with some form of autofocus. The shift to a larger pixel count, however, will require a new lens design. This is due to the higher number of points which are different for each lens. In addition, a higher pixel count requires a large number of software operations, some of which are considered more difficult. A higher pixel count will also bring a greater number of parameters to manage. For example, the higher the pixel count, the more the hardware will need to interpolate between actual values. To test the requirements, Figure 6 shows a corner view of a Nokia View80 with 3 megapixels. The figure shows that the autofocus system is comprised of a Pentium IV chip, camera, and lens. The camera also contains a CCD imager with horizontal and vertical registers of 512 lines. Since each pixel position is 506.66 μm in width, the aspect ratio is (506.66 μm/512)1.0, or 50.9 μm per pixel. A 16-bit hardware-image-processing system with 24 kilobytes of on-board program memory, as provided by the Pentium IV, allows for custom calculations. Both AF tracking and photo taking modes are used.
