Problem with Ubuntu Sound Mixer in Virtualbox

I have a dual-boot system with OS X Mountain Lion and Ubuntu 14.10. The sound is great on both.
I tried to run a virtual machine inside OS X and install Ubuntu inside it. I started the virtual machine, and the sound in the guest OS is horrible.
Is there a way to resolve this?
EDIT: Apparently the problem was with sound in Windows 7 in Virtualbox (in my case).

It seems like I had this problem once and solved it by installing VirtualBox Guest Additions as suggested by xerub.
You can do this by running
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-utils

in the terminal.
