To describe the outcome of gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) used in the treatment of metastatic brain disease. Retrospective study of a prospectively maintained database of all patients treated with GKRS at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital between July 1998 and November 2005. During this time period, 198 patients were treated for a total of 280 metastatic brain lesions. The primary tumor was renal in 73 (73%) patients, lung in 13 (13%), breast in 7 (7%), colon in 7 (7%), sarcoma in 4 (4%), and other in 3 (3%). The majority (73%) of lesions were treated as single lesions. The median diameter of the treated lesions was 2.8 cm (range 0.5-12.0 cm). The median follow-up was 13 months (range, 1-60 months) in the entire cohort. The mean number of doses per lesion was 11.6 (range, 1-31). The median overall survival for patients with a single lesion was 19.3 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 14.8-23.8 months).
