What is the purpose of AutoCAD?

AutoCAD was developed to meet the needs of architects, draftsman, and others involved in architectural, engineering, and construction design. For any number of reasons, it is a good idea to have a professional “eye” available to provide comments on design documents (or progress reports), particularly if the design is a complex one. The standard drawing package is well suited to being the primary tool for all aspects of architectural and engineering design. By doing so, a building design, like other designs, becomes more refined as the scope of the project grows, and changes in style, technology, engineering, and aesthetics (style) influence the design. For instance, the graphical style of modern CAD software has been influenced by the style of digital design software used to create web pages, where design elements are frequently composed in layers, sometimes on top of each other. AutoCAD enables the designer to work with the same 3D drawing at all levels of the design, so that the architect, the engineer, and the builder can see and interact with the 3D modeling at each level at any time.

AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design and drafting software application. Developed and marketed by Autodesk, AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers.
