The report says the scammer claims to be a person in law enforcement from one of the biggest countries in the world, with access to information on the fraudsters’ behalf and with a grudge against the officers.
In their report, officers say the scammers are likely working alongside people in the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau in an attempt to catch officers who would actually fall victim to the scam.
The scammers then call or text the officers to ask them to wire the money or to send a check, and will provide an ID or a letter from a government agency in their support.
When the officer communicates with the person and agrees to send the money or a check, it’s a trap. The scammer will ask for the officer’s real first name, then change it to a dummy name. Then the officer can be arrested, prosecuted and sued for sending the money.
If the officer refuses, they are told their family members may be hurt, or even dead. If the officer gives in and wires the money, they are charged with embezzlement and other crimes.
“Until we get the word out to other officers, we’re going to be the patsies,” one officer said. “These guys have so much power. They are almost invincible.”
The department says these scammers are willing to travel to anywhere in the country and have taken advantage of officers from both the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau and the NYPD’s Organized Crime Control Bureau.

Bitmap Font Generator generates a TTF, OBJ, 3DS or ES2 file for each font on your system. You are free to load any TrueType or OpenType font. You can either select a standard font, that will be used for the output, or any font contained in the list of fonts on your computer. We have used preview fonts and wanted to make sure you can convert any other type of font as well. We have a wide range of fonts and you can convert them all in a single converter.
