Here I want to give a personal account of what has made me fall in love with the web in general and the semantic web in particular.

I was planning to be an economist, but I dropped out of the University of Nottingham shortly before completing a Master’s degree in Economics. Instead, I started working for Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the UK on their OSF (Organisation Specific Facility) project. At the time, this was the first major commercial system for the open-ended, distributed authoring of information. I fell in love with the power and flexibility of the system: it was a totally open system with a decent notion of internationalization and localization. It was also a distributed network: you could compose documents, search and browse documents, import and export documents, and even have a private, secure server of your own for which you could host whatever you liked.

When OSF came out in 1992, it was possible to host a document yourself, but only on proprietary platforms. In 1993, I got bored of this and decided that I wanted to write a program to view any OSF file, so that I could view and change any document I liked at leisure. If you want something to be notified of changes to a particular data, and you don’t want those changes to affect other parts of your code, you may want to consider using the Observer pattern. For example, say you’ve got some data (e.g. user session info), and an object keeps a list of observers and notifies them of data changes. When it changes it just adds the changed data to the object’s list of changed data. If an object wants to read the changed data, it just collects the list of changed data and executes on it.

The Observer pattern is used when there is a well-defined event structure.
Let’s say you have a table of “stuff” and some special sort of data is added to that table. Before the change is made to the table, you want to know that such an event has occurred (so you can update your UI or other parts of your code). With the observer pattern, you decouple your application in the following way:
