What’s new:

As it turns out, there is no better way to start implementing my version of an all new gear system than to immerse myself fully into a complex, multi-user game. One of the scenarios in this game is the Osaka Civil War scenario. This scenario is extremely open, allowing a wide variety of actions and resulting in an even longer and more complex campaign. This scenario in particular causes division among the players, each with their own goals and way of handling things.

This post is about the Damascus Gear Operation Osaka issue I’ve been having, specifically the crappy stat system of the game and the useless stats it provides. In my opinion, this stat system is the biggest problem with all of the games from the Damascus Gear series as it has lead to a lot of skipping of skill development simply because the stats do not give the player the tools he needs to succeed at what the game is really about.

This is a common problem with all of the Gear games and was the same problem I had with Magicka, for example. These issues may seem small to you and they may not even seem to be an issue for you, but to me, it is a major issue for the sake of advancing the story. I really don’t think the stories of how one thing leads to another would work if people could pick and choose what they wanted and do as they please. Instead of fixing the issue of stats in Damascus Gear, they’ve just created hacky and useless equipment to make up for an extremely poor stat and stat progression system.

Conclusion:

So after trying my best to deal with this issue, I came to the conclusion that you cannot have a true 3rd person shooter without stats, so that is what the current game does. Instead of letting players skip so much of the process of becoming better at what they do, the devs have put in hacky hacks to give them stats. This makes you feel like you’ve skipped so much of the advancement you could have when you are really just skipping most of it because you did not feel like going through stat development all over again and just used hacks instead. How can the simple issues with stat development become a bigger problem? Well here you go.
