the installation process takes a lot of time because it copies a huge data set over the internet, and from what ive heard the installer doesn’t always work as expected. if you dont need office and only want the product key, you can install the office 2013 upgrade trial from here:
the remainder of the installation process was pretty simple, although it did take a long time. once done, i took a quick look at what i had been given. there is a windows update prerequisite, which simply checks for update files and downloads them. however, since i did not install an update during install, it did not install any update files.
so let’s see if we can get to office at all and launch it. i see the usual annoying dialog explaining what office is and to click agree, except this time, i click cancel, and let it go off on its own. the result? the office launcher thingy appears and i can choose between my office 2013 programs.
a look in the start menu shows that i have word 2013, excel 2013, and powerpoint 2013. nice. in order to launch excel from office, you need to have at least one spreadsheet open. its good that this is the case, because a preview of the image looks mighty unsuspicious. the main forms screen has a tab for quickly opening existing spreadsheets.
but now, if i switch back to the main forms screen, i find the following error. cant see any reason why the application would not launch with just that one error, but it is possible. then again, i don’t need to work in excel. lets try the next program. the same error occurs. weird.
so all in all, office 2013 is a nice upgrade. its not going to win any awards, but it works well, and has some nice new features. of course, many of you will now be asking the question, “is it worth it to get it?“.
