For me, the greatest Friends episode of all time is “The One With the Big Kiss.” For a lot of people, however, it’s “The One With The Rumor.” That’s because this episode is the origin story of the Friendsfan movement, and has been the focal point of many a comics issue and story based around the character of Chandler. This episode came at a time when the show’s status was in serious flux. Just after the premiere of this episode, “The One with The Rumor,” the show was sent to the mid-season trading block. Relying on strong word of mouth to save the show from cancellation, the show was placed on a mid-season break, and then picked up again for a fifth season. For more than a year, this was the Friends show. Then NBC decided it didn’t want Friends anymore, and at the time, one of the worst decisions in the history of network television. Friends was hastily cancelled, and the Thanksgiving episode “The One with the Rumor” was never shown. It was, however, included in the Friends For a Year Marathon. So if you want to see this episode, we’ll have to wait until next year, when Netflix will most likely release a new Friends season, and we’ll be treated to the second-best Thanksgiving episode of all time.

There are a few good ones scattered throughout the middle of the second season, starting with “The One in Cabin Fever.” After months of barely hearing Phoebe and Rachel talk to one another, Ross and Rachel come back together in the suburbs to get pregnant. But Rachel, the most implausibly obsessive person in the show, goes into labor, and they’re all sent off to the hospital. The hilarious thing is that all the doctors and nurses who keep talking about Monica and Chandler’s son are actually trying to get a glimpse of this reality! They mistake a suction pump for a breast pump, and all Rachel can say is, “It smells like a hospital.”

the highlight episodes are the one with the proposal, the one with the rumor, the one with the rumor, the one with the rumor, the one with the rumor, the one with the rumor and the one with the rumor. the four episodes in which phoebe’s brother frank comes to visit (pilot, friends with benefits, the one with the rumor and the one with the proposal) are pretty great, but i’d say the three most notable ones are the ones in which rachel, in her eighth month, goes into labor. for starters, there’s the one with the rumor, which features some of the show’s funniest writing, as well as a storyline involving chandler trying to leave the show before he can be fired. the latter happens when he mistakenly tells everybody he’s getting a job in new york. phoebe is furious, and even joey, the show’s resident fanboy, agrees with her. meanwhile, ross is struggling to put the show’s future in order, particularly because he’s not sure he wants to continue with it. this culminates in the episode’s stunning climax, where ross decides to quit the show, and the cast and crew tearfully rally behind him. the final episode of the season is even more powerful, as the cast and crew, now with a new baby, are facing the prospect of having to shut down production. as rachel and ross are both ready to go through with their respective abortions, phoebe, knowing this may be their last day at central perk, urges them to do it. in the end, they decide to stay together. that part of the episode is a touching homage to the show’s original finale. —
season four of friends comes hot on the heels of the seventh season. the show’s eighth and final season is also its best. it’s a departure from the awkwardness and oversimplification of the show’s first six seasons. here, the cast is reunited for the first time in nearly a decade, and the characters are stronger than ever. the first episode of the season, the one where phoebe and mike get back together, is the show at its finest. the story revolves around phoebe’s and mike’s failed marriage, and how they all cope in their various ways. ross and rachel are still together, and they’re stronger than ever, having had a baby named charlie. mike’s deadbeat friend robin moves in with phoebe, and it’s just a mess. the rest of the season is also very good. the one where the fat lady sings is a touching story about the main characters’ relationships, while the one with the rumor is one of the funniest episodes of the show’s entire run. the one with the rumor and the one with the proposal are also good, but the season-ending finale, the one where everybody finds out, is the strongest of all. “we can’t even pretend to be happy anymore,” phoebe says at the end of the finale, “so we’re just going to tell the truth.” it’s a fitting end to an excellent season.
