but at least the film has a lot of cool action scenes, especially when harry, ron, hermione and neville battle voldemort and his death eaters in the forbidden forest. the combat is tight and exciting, and the setpieces are vividly depicted, thanks to a computer-generated voldemort, who looks so authentic that you half expect him to step out of the trees. unlike some scenes in the first two films, the battle in the forest feels natural and believable, with nobody looking like a particularly cold, calculating creep. when we finally get to the climax of the film, we’re treated to a satisfying sequence in which harry and voldemort face off, and even the battle of the goblet of fire is here, with a duel that’s reminiscent of other magic-based movies. the action of this film also feels more inspired than the previous two, even though the first two are loaded with action.
however, the climax here is not as satisfying as it was in the first two films. voldemort’s resurrection is less than convincing, and the result feels tacked on, like harry’s first defeat of the dark lord (and the dark lord’s death in the book) in philosopher’s stone. even the showdown at the end of the movie feels a bit rushed, and the chase that follows feels a bit underwhelming. there are also a few things that don’t quite add up. for example, how is the ministry of magic’s security so bad that no one notices that the best-protected ministry building in britain is being invaded by death eaters? also, how is it that a bunch of teenagers have access to a prison with such an elaborate security system? but despite these things, the film still moves at a brisk pace, and i was thrilled to see the actors return for a fourth outing.
