Another advantage that Finale offers is its extensive support for transposing or augmenting existing notations, and making them into new ones ona grand scale, which not only offers some alternatives to creating a new transcription, but also gives you a chance to experiment with some of the new abilities available to you in Finale 2010. Since the original music I have in mind is rather more complicated than most of the tune-sets, the success or otherwise of this kind of facility needs to be judged as a whole.
First things first. Finale is no DAW in that it lacks an editing facility, but what it does have is a basic score editor which can be used to change how the notation appears in-score, which, as most of you will realise, is a pretty important feature for some kinds of compositions. Finale 2010 is capable of inserting and deleting notes and maybe even editing note pitch and length, which can be done by using the editor’s simple fields to call up a piano roll and then adjusting its position to the degree of accuracy you require, and then adjusting the score’s number values (by which I mean all the lines in the score as well as the staff, since Finale’s modelling of the notation doesn’t go down to the point level). Finale can also combine syllables if you write, for example, a triplet on a rest, and you can move the syllable and its (typically 4 bar) note to the top of the bar in a kind of double staff.
In addition to making some long-overdue upgrades to some of its feature-sets, the MakeMusic Team has also polished up Finale 2010 quite a bit during its development, and its new interface is much more clearly organised. From start to finish, the application can be smoothly integrated with your existing MakeMusic library, and helps you to find documents easily. ButMakeMusic haven’t simply offered a new look and feel; there has been a similar overhaul of the way the software displays data on your screen, and some significant additions that I’ll go into more detail on in a minute. Other new features include the ability to link scores to photos in the Finale Gallery and to add file attachments to Finale documents as well as the new ability to open PDF files directly within the software.But the biggest change for Finale 2010 has been the new Concert and Glide facility, which is basically a kind of ‘best of’ feature of Finale 2009 and MakeMusic Soli, allowing you to playback a whole series of notes or beats in various different styles and in combination with each other – like jazz chords, or piano chords to accompany a vocal, for example. To produce this quality, you’ll need a Compaq Dual Core Processor (or similar).
When Finale you’re working on a single score, you can use various toolpalettes to guide your editing. Scoring ‘View’ lets you see your score in a number of different ways, in ways that allow you to plan performance approaches and continue to monitor changes made in the Score as you go along. Editing ‘Instrument’ gives access to the Instrumental Edit Window, which is clunky compared to Finale’s Human Playback facilities, but does let you hear a performance in context. Editing ‘Tempo’ brings up the TempoWindow, which has a great many controls for adjusting the dynamic, the time signature and the tempo. Finally, you can edit ‘Timbre’ with the Instrument’s PolypedalEdit, which will let you compare the polyphony available on your specific instrument. It’s also the only way to configure the instrument’s configuration, which is where Finale gets its Polypedal series of instruments, complete with their own designs, modes and instruments.
Finale’s time-based editing is also easy to use, even for finessing MIDI edits as you go along. Finale will always keep a MIDI tag on the note that’s active in the Timeline, so if you drag it out of the Timeline, you can delete it without the need to keep track of the MIDI Channel, Key and Velocity you entered it with, and drag in another one instead (if you have multiple instruments per part). As soon as you add a note anywhere inside the Timeline, Finale will add a gate for it, and you can edit either the length or the gate’s shape (gate/transition, short note, long note, sustained note) with the EQ controls, or use the Time Track to set a new tempo. As with most Finale versions, if you change the layout of a score, you’ll need to go through the Edit Grid again to set up your new page, and this can be tedious if you’re working on a very complicated score.
