the final boss in serious sam 3 is arguably one of the most difficult in the history of video game, and it takes two players with a combination of three console controllers to defeat him. the final boss battle is played from sam’s first-person view, and the battle lasts two to three minutes. though not officially revealed by the development team, the fight takes place on a gigantic sand dune, near a vast ocean. this battle is among the most popular in video game history, with it being one of the reasons the game received critical acclaim. most if not all of the players who participated in the final boss battle credited it as the game’s single most memorable aspect. just like in the previous games, the player can only rely on one weapon at a time, which is slowly drained, and a specific weapon’s power increases with the player-character’s level. the player also has access to the enemies’ weapons as well, if they are nearby. in the game’s opening cutscene, the player kills the central boss, a gigantic pseudo-cyborg named general gutt, with a combination of an anti-tank weapon and dual machine guns. just like in serious sam 1 and serious sam 2, the battle against the boss takes place on one of his four arms. from the game’s beginning, the player can use the “boost” option to double their health (but the option will automatically disappear if their health bar reaches full capacity).
