What if an alternative space opened in the late ’80s — a comically immersive maze of mouse-filled rooms of color, experimentally soft sounds and queer theoretical papers graced with handmade art?

Would it be a progressive academy like the legendary arts and humanities wasps like to imagine in their cult-like Modern Language Association conferences? Or maybe an oasis for explorers of a sort — a loving, rebellious den of handmade music and fresh experiments in twentieth-century avant-rock?

Such was the brainchild of a small group of Columbia University graduate students from 1961-1965.

They called themselves “Rat and Plank.”

They called their small, secret society The Committee of Scholars, Artists, and Writers. And they called their experiments “Zone of the Interior.”

Rat and Plank was a graduate seminar — a forum for students to explore ideas in depth.

When I asked Professor James Billington of Columbia’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Library if he was familiar with the organization, he chuckled, “Of course, young man — if you’re trying to have a secret club. Keep trying for the next week, and on and on. I’ll let you know what we could find.”

And he did find the Organization of Rat and Plank — a website with a whimsical accounting of events and a cornucopia of work.

The website suggests that even as early as 1961, ideas were circulating in the Columbia graduate school about a radical group of student activists, explorers, and visionaries.

“There was a certain percentage of students there, call them very committed’revolutionaries’ perhaps, who were certainly influenced by much of the inner intensity at Columbia University during that period,” explained Billington.

I still couldn’t believe it — there were chapters of Rat and Plank at Columbia, including a branch of the organization at Barnard College.
